California’s High-Speed Rail Authority has issued one of the largest rail infrastructure procurements in U.S. history—a $3.5 billion contract to build the nation’s first true high-speed rail system.
What’s Happening:
• Track and systems installation begins in the Central Valley next year
• 119-mile contract covers Merced to Bakersfield extensions
• Includes track, overhead power systems, train control, and communications
• Work is divided into nine phased packages for efficient rollout
Progress to Date:
• 171 miles currently under design or construction
• 70+ miles of guideway completed
• Nearly 60 major structures finished, 30 more underway
• 463 of 494 total miles (SF to LA/Anaheim) environmentally cleared
Economic Impact:
• Over 16,100 jobs created since groundbreaking
• Up to 1,700 workers on construction sites daily
• Most jobs filled by Central Valley residents
The project’s new CEO, Ian Choudri, says the accelerated delivery strategy focuses on “building faster, smarter, and more economically,” positioning California to lay its first high-speed rail track in the Western Hemisphere next year.
This infrastructure investment represents significant economic development for California’s Central Valley and creates opportunities across construction, logistics, and related industries.
